Interdisciplinary Reading Circle of the Network Urban Research
Next Meeting: 17.07.2024 at 15:30 in room S3/13 111
2024/07/17 15:30-17:00 by Network Urban Research
By reading selected texts from the interdisciplinary field of urban research together, we ask ourselves the following questions: What does a text contribute to our understanding of urbanity, urbanization and the city? How convincing is an argument or a perspective outside of its disciplinary localization? What are its weaknesses?
For the next meeting we would like to discuss the following text:
- Davis, M. (2018). City of quartz: Excavating the future in Los Angeles. Chapter: Fortress L.A.. (Paperback edition). Verso. (Original work published 1990)
Concept:Our interdisciplinary reading circle provides a platform for academic exchange on key texts in urban studies. We invite all interns from different disciplines to enrich the discussion with their perspectives. We look forward to your participation!
Guiding idea of our reading circle: We think it is very interesting to ask how far a text (or author) that is considered a classic in one’s own discipline, or that is central to one’s own concept of urbanity, is also convincing for someone with a different disciplinary perspective. Questions that might guide our discussion include: What can it add to an understanding of urbanity? How convincing is the text outside its disciplinary location? What are its weaknesses?
Conceptual framework: We aim to align our future text selection with the interests of the reading group. Therefore, we propose discussing a selection of texts for our future meetings during our first meeting. We welcome your suggestions for texts that you would like to discuss in an interdisciplinary context.
